The Big Swiss AI Secret: Decentralized Intelligence and Digital Sovereignty
Alexander Brunner

Switzerland has quietly become one of the world’s most powerful AI ecosystems. With ETH Zurich, world-class research labs, a dense network of deep-tech startups, and a strong tradition of neutrality and privacy, the country is uniquely positioned to lead the era of digital sovereignty.
But the real Swiss AI secret is not just research excellence—it is the combination of AI innovation, decentralized infrastructure, and trusted governance.
This talk explores why Switzerland is emerging as a natural hub for sovereign AI systems, how its ecosystem intersects with Web3 and decentralized compute, and why the next generation of intelligent systems may be built on principles pioneered in the Swiss digital landscape.
Drawing insights from my new The Big Swiss AI Secret book, which is based on over 100 interviews, this session reveals how Switzerland’s unique model, high-trust institutions, open science, and decentralized technologies could shape the future of AI in a world increasingly concerned with control, privacy, and technological independence.
