Gas is a fundamental mechanism in Ethereum. It determines how much users pay for transactions and constrains how much computation and data can fit into a block. In other words, gas simultaneously drives transaction pricing and enforces block-level resource limits.
It is no surprise, then, that changes to gas pricing and metering can significantly impact Ethereum's effective throughput and scalability.
In this talk, we will explain how the EVM currently measures resource usage and assigns gas costs, and explore recent proposals that aim to unlock significant throughput gains through gas reforms.
