2026-04-10 –, Töss - Workshop (Y23-G-04)
Progress towards cryptographically relevant quantum computers continues to accelerate. Ethereum is taking the risk seriously. In this talk I will give an update on (1) the state of quantum computing and plausible planning timelines, (2) how Ethereum is affected: transaction signatures, BLS aggregation, and KZG commitments, (3) recent progress towards quantum readiness, including the EF’s post-quantum workstreams, specs, and devnets. The talk targets a general Ethereum audience and aims to be both an introduction and a grounded outlook.
This is an introductory status update on post-quantum readiness and its implications for Ethereum. I’ll start with where quantum computing stands today and how to think about plausible planning timelines. Then I’ll map the impact on Ethereum’s Protocol strategic goals: improve UX (transaction signatures and the account model/EOA UX), scale L1 (BLS signatures and aggregation), scale blobs (KZG commitments). I’ll explain what each component does, why it exists, and why post-quantum replacements are not a simple drop-in. Finally, I’ll translate recent Ethereum progress (dedicated PQ effort, public calls, evolving specs, and multi-client devnet work) into a clear mental model of where things stand in 2026: what milestones signal real progress, what remains open, and what to watch next.
