I am a Research Scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems (MPI-SWS) and a former Research Scientist at Matter Labs. I hold a Ph.D. in Computer Science from MPI-SWS, completed in collaboration with Universität des Saarlandes (UdS), under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Krishna P. Gummadi. My research focuses on advancing fairness in blockchain technology and Decentralized Finance (DeFi). In 2022, I undertook a 6-month research internship at Chainlink Labs. I earned my Master’s degree in Computer Science from the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil, in 2017, advised by Prof. Dr. Fabrício Benevenuto. During my MSc, I held two research internships at MPI-SWS in Saarbrücken, Germany. I completed my B.Sc. in Computer Science at the Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto (UFOP) in 2015 and participated in an exchange program at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in Budapest, Hungary, through the Brazilian Science Without Borders (CAPES) program in 2013-2014.
I have also worked on machine learning projects focused on risk and loan default prediction as well as health insurance characterization and forecasting. One of these projects was recognized in 2019 as the most innovative health software in Brazil by IT Forum 365, promoted by PwC and ITMidia. Claudio J. Tessone is Professor of Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technologies at the Informatics Department, University of Zurich. He is co-founder and Chairman of the UZH Blockchain Center. He is also incharge of NetSci Society. He holds a PhD in Physics (on complex systems) and an Habilitation on "Complex socio-economic systems" from ETH Zurich. He is an expert in the modelling of complex socio-economic, and socio-technical systems from an interdisciplinary perspective. He is interested in the link between microscopic agent behaviour and the rules these agents abide to, and the global, emergent properties of socio-economic and socio-technical systems.
Blockchain-based systems and cryptocurrencies are the main pillar of his research (being among the first to study them). This includes crypoeconomics (from financial aspects to meso- and macro- properties, such as withstanding, emergent centralisation), big-data blockchain analytics and forensics, design of blockchain-based systems, and characterisation of economic incentives that are present (by design or set inadvertently) in them.

As of 1 April 2017 I am working as a professor at Ritsumeikan University, Japan, in the College of Information Science and Engineering while keeping some projects as a principle investigator at the Centre for Democracy Studies Aarau (ZDA), University of Zurich, Switzerland. At Ritsumeikan University I am also running the Digital Governance Systems Lab.
In this dual position I teach and do interdisciplinary research in several domains of digital governance. I am particularly interested in internet based platforms and tools for citizens (e-participation) as well as public administrations (e-government) enhancing transparency and deliberation in an information society.
