From Temporary Gatherings to Durable Institutions
2026-05-09 –, Masaryk Stage

This talk examines the shift from popup cities to permanent hubs and villages through the lens of crypto commons research. It argues that the future of decentralized institutions is not only a technical question, but also a cultural and ethical one: shaped by shared norms, social scaffolding, and the communities that make accountability possible.

I come to this topic both as a researcher and as a builder. My doctoral research in political science examined how crypto commons communities try to create decentralized institutions, and why technical coordination mechanisms alone are never enough to make them durable. What matters just as much is the social layer: shared norms, legitimacy, trust, and forms of accountability held in community life.

Over the last five years, I have also been co-building commons hub, a place-based experiment in communal living, working, and institution building in the Austrian Alps. The recent shift from popup cities and temporary gatherings toward more permanent hubs and villages seems to signal a broader rediscovery within crypto communities: of the social, of culture, and of place-based continuity.

What interests me here is how this move toward permanence reflects a deeper change in what crypto communities are actually optimizing for: not only coordination at scale, but continuity, accountability, and shared life. These questions also inform my current work around Valley of the Commons, which will be launched with a four-week popup village in August 2026.

Felix Fritsch is a political scientist and co-founder of commons hub in the Austrian Alps. His work explores crypto commons, decentralized institutions, and the social conditions that make new forms of coordination durable.
