In this community-focused presentation I will outline the radical plan to scale Ethereum L1 execution with ZK and compare it with the state of the art ZK rollups. I want to highlight the technological differences between these two approaches, new challenges faced by the EF zkEVM team and learnings that L1 can take from the years of work by L2s. Targeted at a wide technical audience.
I come to the topic from the perspective of L2s, being responsible for creating and maintaining L2BEAT ZK Catalog. I also follow discussions on ZK proving L1. I want to demystify ZK technology and convince people that it can drastically improve Ethereum, while also sharing my observations and lessons learned from ZK rollups.
A rough outline of my presentation:
- Quick explainer on ZK tech and how ZK L2s work
- State of the art: overview of current ZK L2 landscape
- Outline zkEVM project (proving L1 STF) and differences from ZK L2s
- Unique challenges for zkEVM and learnings from ZK L2s.
