Since the launch of the Beacon Chain, validator deposits in delegated staking can be front-run by validator key owners, enabling the replacement of withdrawal credentials and the redirection of funds. This talk presents EIP-8205, which introduces withdrawal credentials preregistration to eliminate this vulnerability. With preregistration, delegated stakers can ensure deposited ETH cannot be stolen
Since the very inception of the Ethereum Beacon Chain, there has been an issue. An initial deposit to the validator made by the delegated staking protocol can be front-run by the validator's owner. Simply put, an owner of the validator's private key can always insert a deposit transaction with their own withdrawal credentials before the delegated staking protocol's transaction, effectively stealing the funds. This issue was never fixed.
In the talk, I will cover EIP-8205: Withdrawal credentials preregistration. This EIP proposes a simple and elegant way to finally fix this front-run vulnerability for good. Delegated staking protocols will now be able to require preregistration of the protocol's withdrawal credentials for the given validator key before making a deposit. This will allow delegated staking protocols to verify that pre-registration exists before making a deposit and ensure that deposited ETH can not be stolen.
