Designing for Participation: Practical Lessons from DAO Governance
2026-05-08 –, Sladkovský Stage

Many DAOs face low engagement and delegate concentration not because of plutocracy alone, but because participation is difficult and poorly incentivized. This talk explores practical governance and incentive designs that make DAOs more attractive to delegates and contributors, fostering more inclusive decision-making.

DAOs have become the primary governance model for major protocols, offering a more equitable and community-driven approach to decision-making. But participation issues threaten their legitimacy: many suffer from delegate concentration, voter apathy, and governance inefficiencies, raising concerns about plutocracy and centralization.

This talk provides a practitioner’s perspective on how DAOs can foster wide, meaningful participation. Starting with an overview of common participation barriers and why they matter for Web3 governance, it then highlights practical approaches that help attract and retain delegates and contributors. Topics include delegate programs, alternative voting mechanisms, incentive structures, and the role of culture and community in creating a welcoming and empowering environment.

Through real-world examples and actionable strategies, attendees will leave with concrete ideas for building more inclusive DAOs. The talk emphasizes reducing friction, strengthening contributor experience, and supporting governance structures where everyone can participate and have an impact.

Marlene (bitblondy) is an independent DAO delegate with a background in social sciences. After writing her thesis on governance incentives, she advocates for good governance and blockchain education and serves on the board of the German Blockchain Association, promoting Web3 at the political level.
