Ethereum has proven it can coordinate finance at scale. But its vision as a "world computer" requires more: infrastructure for governance, identity, public goods, and self-sovereignty. This talk shows what's being built beyond DeFi, why these projects struggle under current support models, and what it would take to support them.
Ethereum has proven it can coordinate finance. But that was never the end goal. The bigger vision is infrastructure that enables coordination beyond markets: governance without institutions, identity without gatekeepers, funding mechanisms for public goods, and systems for collective decision-making.
Some of this already exists, but there is much more to build. Through hackathons and ecosystem work with Funding the Commons and Crypto Altruists, I've seen builders work toward this vision in practice. What's often missing is support infrastructure that fits non-financial work—longer timelines, different metrics, and different expectations of what success looks like.
I'm excited to explore what's being built beyond DeFi and discuss what might need to shift for Ethereum to meaningfully support infrastructure beyond markets. Realizing the broader vision means learning to fund and sustain different kinds of work differently.
