Decentralized Outcome Funding for Investigative Reporting
06-01, 10:30–10:55 (Europe/Prague), Flower Stage

Impact certificates create a feedback loop between producing impact and receiving funding.This talk describes a demo for funding investigative reporters who record outcomes from their stories onchain.

The broad idea behind Impact Certificates is that purchasing impact should be similar to how one buys a t-shirt. They overcome the issue of double selling of impact (create change once and then market to as many funders as possible) and giving donations based on brand rather than outcomes.

Incubated at Protocol Labs, Hypercerts are a web3 standard for impact certificates. This talk will go into a demo built by VoiceDeck in collaboration with the Ethereum Foundation to help traditional media newsrooms port their private database of impact as Hypercerts on Optimism.

Some of the topics we touch on;

  • current problem in grant funding space around double selling of impact & reputation based donating
  • integration with Hypercerts (web3 impact certs)
  • quantification of impact via Benefit Cost Ratios
  • North star: getting the Panama Papers onchain!
  • Testnet demo with media outlets from India at app.voicedeck.org
