Did China really invent automated surveillance ? Is Social Credit the epitome of digital panopticon envisioned in Black Mirror ? What's behind the hype ?


China's Social Credit System captured the imagination of the public as the symbol of digital totalitarianism. It seemed to realize the madmen dreams of cybernetics utopians, who believed in the power of computer to sort people based on the behaviors. But what is really is Social Credit ? Let's find out.

I'm a PhD student at the University of Vienna, specialist of China's digital transformation. I work on the Social Credit System and more generally the development and use of the information technology for government purpose. I previously worked at the French Embassy in China as a technology researcher. I am the co-founder of EastIsRed, a China focused advisory company.
