In this talk I will provide a comprehensive understanding of the role of sequencers in Layer 2 (L2) blockchain scaling solutions, their operation, and the evolution towards decentralized sequencers. The discussion will cover the fundamental functions of sequencers, the challenges
In “Sequencers in Layer 2 Scaling Solutions and Beyond”, we will explore the key role of sequencers in L2 solutions, where they are responsible for ordering and executing transactions. I will highlight the prevalence of centralized sequencers in current L2 solutions, their benefits in terms of performance, but also the concerns related to centralization, security, and potential censorship. Then I will delve into decentralized sequencers, which utilize a decentralized network of nodes to perform sequencing, aiming to address the issues associated with centralization. Additionally, I will cover the emergence of shared sequencers, which allow multiple rollups to share a single decentralized network of sequencers, providing interoperability advantages between rollups.
