Ethereum has chosen a rollup-centric roadmap. Rollups push for new protocol upgrades according to their needs. Ethereum L1 can adopt these changes downstream once they are mature. But what if it doesnt'? EVM fragmentation is a hard upcoming challenge for the Ethereum ecosystem.
Ethereum has embraced a rollup-centric roadmap. Rollups are becoming increasingly mature. With efforts such as Rollup Improvement Proposals (RIPs), an inversion of the innovation flow is occurring. Formerly, upgrades would reach Ethereum L1 first, and rollups would adapt. Now, Rollups have specific needs, and push for upgrades that solve problems for them. This creates two externalities, one positive and one negative, respectively that protocol upgrades are more easily testable with more users and developers but that it creates potent EVM fragmentation risks.
